Queens Club

Moreton played host to a strong Queen’s Club team on Saturday in what proved to be a close and enjoyable match. Tom had done well in matching the opponents with all rubbers played off a level handicap.

Hattie Hamilton got the day underway unsure which team she was playing for until she got on court. Thankfully for Moreton she was playing for the home team and took the rubber 6-1, 6-2 against Tony Penny.

Corin Jenkins levelled for Queen’s beating Martin Trees in 3 sets 3-6, 6-1, 4-6 before Chris Kroeger gave Queen’s the lead going into lunch with victory over Simon Hobson 4-6, 2-6.

Tony Branfield and Miranda Meades had the unenviable job of playing directly after lunch. The mashed potato seemed to weigh heaviest with Miranda who went down 6-0 in the first set. By the second set the fish from lunch may have done its magic as brain food for she was able to work out Branfield’s serve and duly took the set 3-6. Branfield then squeaked the third set 6-5 to level the match going into the final game.

A packed dedans watched Moreton’s club champion Tom Bomford take a commanding win in the first set 6-1. But Queen’s James Coyne wasn’t ready to accept defeat and came back to take the second set 5-6. Coyne had found his range and the corners playing a variety of shots that Bomford wasn’t able to return. The third set was as close as the second and finally fell to the improving Coyne to give Queen’s Club the victory on the day 2-3.
