Nat. League Div 8 v Holyport
First up was team captain Keith Beechener who hoped to set the team on the right course. After trading the first two sets 1-6 and 6-2 Keith found himself 1-5 in the third. Despite a brave comeback to 5-5 his opponent, Barnaby Briggs, edged the final game, the set 6-5, and the match.
Jonny Miller tried to emulate Keith's strategy and also traded the first two sets with Colm O'Shea. However, in this case the sets were hard fought at 4-6 and 6-5. Into the deciding set and Colm found himself 0-3 down and fighting for breath when it was fortunate that Tom Granville happened by the court and convinced him to retire. Jonny's game was starting to come together in the second and third sets and this wasn't the way that Moreton would have wanted to take the rubber. Colm made a quick recovery thanks to Tom's intervention.
In the deciding game John Murphy raced to a 5-3 lead and then realised that the team strategy was to lose the first set so he complied and allowed John Garrett to take it 5-6. In the second set John (Murphy) stepped up a gear and levelled the match with a 6-1 score. The final set was keenly fought and John (Murphy) took it 6-4 to give Moreton their second match win in three this season.
Next up: the team 'travel' to Leamington next Friday (10th October, 7pm).
