Moreton v Seacourt
Seacourt sent an eight strong touring team to the midlands for an enjoyable days conversation, lunch and rugby with a spot of tennis to be played; three doubles and two singles rubbers.
First on court were Andrew Hamilton and Keith Beechener facing Jerry Rogers and Jim Player. In an extremely close game the away pair took the first set 5-6 before Andrew and Keith responded for Moreton with a 6-5 set of their own taking the rubber into a deciding set which went to the visitors again by the narrowest of margins, 5-6.
Next up for Moreton were Tony Branfield and Grant Arthur playing former Moreton member Norman Smith and Colin Harberd in what turned out to be a one-sided affair ending 6-3, 6-0 to the home side.
In the first singles rubber Kevin Higgins provided another straight sets win for Moreton over Adrian Warden 6-0, 6-5 leaving the tie at 2-1 to Moreton Morrell over lunch.
The final doubles rubber proved to be more like the first with Seacourt’s Chris Wall and Mark bethel taking the first set 3-6 from Moreton’s Mark Leefe and Kristof Kunsmann before the home pair levelled to a set each by taking the second set 6-5. The decider was again a close affair won by Moreton 6-5 to take the day 3-1 with only the final singles to play.
The final singles rubber saw Moreton’s Rob Stewart take the first set 6-4 before Kevin Nelson for Seacourt restored some Seacourt pride with wins in the final two sets 4-6 and 3-6 leaving the match score at 3-2 to Moreton
